what i do

Listen
First and foremost, I listen. Attentive listening to someone is very different to having a normal conversation, and it's the most important therapeutic first step.

Understand
I take in and try to make sense of what I've heard. It can be a massive relief to discover that difficult or messy emotions can be thoughtfully considered and - hopefully - understood.

Play
Some children - especially younger ones - can't easily verbalise their thoughts and feelings. I watch their activities or play alongside them to help them express what they can't find words for.

Communicate
Over time, I work on opening up channels to communicate in whichever way a young person feels most comfortable using. Finding this contact can take time and trust.

Develop
Therapy generally has the goal of moving children and young people on in their development, rather than creating dependency. Developmental steps might be slight or gradual, or might happen overnight. I work with a parent or carer on specific and realistic outcomes for each child, and give appropriate feedback.
